About the Green Steel Hub

Welcome to the Green Steel Hub.

The steel industry is the largest industrial consumer of coal. For every tonne of steel produced in 2020, nearly two tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) were emitted. Globally, the steel industry is responsible for up to 9% of global emissions. Meeting the goal of the Paris climate agreement to hold temperature rise to below 1.5C will not be possible without action to decarbonise the steel sector. The investment cycle for the sector is around 15-20 years. This means we have a critical window to act now, to prevent locking in emissions to 2050 and beyond.

The achieve the change we need to see in the steel sector, we need collaboration. Driving the transition will require actors across civil society, business, investment and policy to advocate for green steel and to make the choices today to drive the transition to near zero emissions steel.

The challenge will not be easy, and knowledge will be key to developing the right calls to action, the right policies, and the right investments. This platform exists to bring together the resources - including blogs, news, reports and event opportunities - to increase knowledge and ensure those looking to work on steel decarbonisation can find up-to-date resources quickly and easily.

In the spirit of collaboration we encourage you to share resources you have found useful with us. If you have a resource for the Green Steel Hub you can submit it here. If you have any other feedback or questions about the hub you can get in touch at info@climatecatalyst.org.
