Net-Zero Roadmap for China’s Steel Industry

Report Release Webinar: Net-Zero Roadmap for China’s Steel Industry

Time: March 2, 2023 at 10 am US ET (4 pm Central European Time)

(Another webinar will be hosted n Chinese for colleagues in China.)

Global Efficiency Intelligence and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory have conducted a joint study to develop a roadmap for deep decarbonization of the Chinese steel industry. This study analyzed the current status of the Chinese steel industry and developed scenarios for 2050 to assess different decarbonization pathways that can substantially reduce the CO2 emissions of the steel industry in China. Five major decarbonization pillars were included in the analysis: 1) demand reduction, 2) energy efficiency, 3) fuel switching, electrification, and grid decarbonization, 4) technology shift to low-carbon steelmaking, 5) carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS). It also provide recommendations for policymakers, industry, and other stakeholders for actions in the near, medium, and long-term.

Join this webinar to find out more about their analysis and findings. You can register using this link.

Joint OECD Steel Committee and IEA Workshop on Steel Decarbonisation

OECD/IEA workshop on steel decarb: The OECD Steel Committee in cooperation with the IEA will organise a virtual workshop on Steel Decarbonisation on Monday, 27 February, 12:00 – 15:00 CET.

The main topic of discussion will focus on the draft findings of a project on steel decarbonisation that is taking place in the context of the Japanese G7 Presidency and supporting the Industry Decarbonisation Agenda (IDA). The workshop will focus on emission measurement standards and relevant data collection frameworks as a basis to inform policy and definitions for near zero emission steel, and how the heterogeneity of steel industry structures and decarbonisation pathways across countries could be reflected therein.

The agenda for the workshop will be sent to participants during the week of 13 February, including further information on the two draft reports. Participants are also invited to share their comments on the report in writing before 3 March 2023 CoB. For any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us at steel@oecd.org.
